Garden Pests
// July 10th, 2009 // Pests, Summer, Vegetables

Oh, the frustration of garden pests!!
First, we’ve got the gophers. They figured out how to get into the garden despite the chicken wire and are now stealing onions and chewing on other plants. Everyday or so I find a new place they’ve come up. I’m not sure what to do about them! We’ve tried the sonic deterrent devices, but apparently those don’t work anymore either.
And second, I now have TONS of earwigs (ewww) all over my zucchini and maybe my strawberries too. I found some advice for trapping them in water, so I put out a tin full of water (and bread, since they like yeast I guess) so we’ll check on that in the morning.
I did make some zucchini bread that turned out awesome, so that’s fun. I just hope I don’t lose the rest of my zucchinis to the bugs!!

Megan..we just looked at your website. Hope you get those earwigs and gophers under control! That’s always disappointing to work so hard and then share the veggies with the critters! Good luck..grandma and Aunt Joann
Thank you! It is disappointing to see my plants get munched on! I put out a trap for the earwigs, it seems to have worked pretty well so far. Jon tried to make it so the gophers can’t get in, so hopefully that helps.

How are the gophers getting around the chicken wire??
We figure that the gopher came under the fence, then over the wire next to the fence (we didn’t actually attach the wire to the fence; Jon says he should have, and will fix it this Fall). Wouldn’t you know, we have a smart gopher.
There was a whole network of tunnels on top of the wire, so Jon tried filling them in a bit and we’ll watch to see if the gopher comes up again. Maybe we’ll try flooding the tunnels… I read a little about that.
We might just have to deal with him this year and do what we can in the Fall! At least he’s eating the onions and not the peppers, or cucumbers or tomatoes…
